Spider web construction

Spider web construction. Computer trace of the movements made by a Cyrtophora citricola spider as it constructed its silk web. The red lines show the spiders path as it formed initial structures such as anchor threads. Yellow lines relate to the construction of the webs horizontal capture sheet and green lines to the vertical threads, which are built last. Flying prey falls onto the non-sticky capture sheet after striking the vertical threads. It is then grabbed by the waiting spider. The web, which takes several nights to build, lasts several weeks. This work was carried out at the University of Basel in Switzerland using a video camera attached to an image scanning device

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate construction of a spider web, specifically that of a Cyrtophora citricola spider. The image is a computer trace of the spider's movements as it meticulously weaves its silk web. The red lines elegantly depict the path taken by the spider during the initial stages, forming anchor threads to establish stability. As the process continues, yellow lines represent the creation of horizontal capture sheets while green lines symbolize vertical threads built last. The genius behind this remarkable design becomes evident when understanding its purpose. Flying prey unwittingly collides with the non-sticky capture sheet after striking against the vertical threads, ultimately falling into an awaiting trap set by our eight-legged protagonist. Conducted at Switzerland's esteemed University of Basel, this groundbreaking work utilized video camera technology attached to an image scanning device. It offers us a glimpse into nature's extraordinary ability to create complex structures through seemingly simple creatures like spiders. This awe-inspiring photograph not only highlights motion and nature but also delves into zoology and wild life studies. It sheds light on arachnids' incredible talent for constructing webs and their vital role in maintaining ecological balance within their habitats. Science Photo Library has once again captured a momentous scientific discovery through this visually stunning print, showcasing both beauty and functionality in one frame.
