Total solar eclipse at totality

Total solar eclipse. Digitally enhanced composite of 22 images of the total solar eclipse of 11 August 1999. The solar corona (white) has been enhanced, highlighting outlying waves and filaments. The solar corona, which is not normally visible, is the Suns outermost and hottest layer. The image also shows the Moon emitting a faint glow. This is caused by doubly reflected sunlight, the phenomenon known as Earthshine. Earthshine is caused by sunlight reflecting off Earth onto the Moon and back to Earth. Eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, and casts its shadow across the Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of a total solar eclipse at its peak. Composed of 22 digitally enhanced images, it beautifully showcases the celestial phenomenon that occurred on 11 August 1999. The image reveals the Sun's corona, its outermost and hottest layer, which has been intensified to highlight intricate waves and filaments extending outward. Intriguingly, this composite also unveils the Moon emitting a faint glow known as Earthshine. This ethereal illumination occurs when sunlight reflects off our planet onto the lunar surface and then back to Earth. It adds an enchanting element to an already mesmerizing scene. Eclipses like this occur when the Moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and Sun, casting its shadow across our planet. This rare alignment creates a momentary darkness as day turns into night for those fortunate enough to witness such an event. The circular shape of this solar eclipse is truly captivating; it symbolizes both unity and harmony within our vast solar system. Additionally, prominences - magnificent rings of plasma erupting from the Sun's surface - add further intrigue to this extraordinary visual spectacle. As you gaze upon this remarkable print from Science Photo Library, let your imagination soar beyond earthly boundaries and delve into the wonders of our universe.
