This print showcases the haunting remains of the USS Susan B. Anthony, a US Navy transport ship that met its tragic fate off the coast of Normandy, France. The image, captured using multibeam sonar bathymetry technology, offers a unique glimpse into history and reminds us of the sacrifices made during World War II. On June 7th, 1944, just one day after the momentous D-Day landings on June 6th as part of Operation Overlord, disaster struck when the Susan B. Anthony struck a mine. The devastating impact caused irreparable damage to the ship's bow and ultimately led to its sinking in the English Channel. In this photograph, we can clearly see evidence of destruction with visible booms and significant damage to what was once known as "number one hole" at the front of the vessel.
