Pioneer 11 Image of Saturn and its Moon Titan
NASAs Pioneer 11 image of Saturn and its moon Titan at the upper left. The irregularities in ring silhouette and shadow are due to technical anomalies in the preliminary data later corrected. Looking at the rings from left to right, the ring area begins with the outer A ring; the Encke Division; the inner A Ring; Cassini Division; the B Ring; the C Ring; and the innermost area where the D Ring would be. The image was made by Pioneer Saturn on Wednesday, August 26, 1979, and received on Earth at 3:19 pm PDT. Pioneer was, at that time, 2, 846, 000 kilometers (1, 768, 422 miles) from Saturn. The image was produced by computer at the University of Arizona and managed by NASAs Ames Research Center

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring beauty of Saturn and its enigmatic moon, Titan. Taken by NASA's Pioneer 11 spacecraft on August 26,1979, this image offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate details of our solar system's sixth planet. At first glance, one cannot help but be drawn to the irregularities in the ring silhouette and shadow. However, it is important to note that these anomalies were merely technical glitches in the preliminary data which were later rectified. From left to right, we can observe various distinct regions within Saturn's magnificent rings. Beginning with the outermost A ring followed by the Encke Division and then transitioning into the inner A Ring, each section presents a unique spectacle. The Cassini Division gracefully separates these rings before leading us towards the B Ring and C Ring. Finally, we reach an area where we would expect to find the D Ring if present. Hailing from a distance of approximately 2,846,000 kilometers (1,768,422 miles) away from Saturn at that time in history; Pioneer was able to capture this breathtaking view for humanity back on Earth. The University of Arizona skillfully produced this image using advanced computer technology under NASAs Ames Research Center's guidance. In this remarkable snapshot taken amidst space exploration history lies not just scientific significance but also an artistic masterpiece capturing nature's wonders beyond our home planet.
