EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to a bygone era, specifically to Newburn Crescent in Swindon around 1870. Before No 1 Sawmills opened in the far west of the Works wood, timber was cut at a mill located on this very street. The image showcases a group of hardworking men who have been diligently engaged in cutting lengths of timber. Transporting ourselves into this Victorian scene, we can almost hear the rhythmic sound of saws slicing through wood and smell the distinct scent of freshly cut timber permeating the air. These skilled workers, dressed in their traditional work attire, embody an era when manual labor was at its peak. The photograph provides us with a glimpse into life within a bustling factory workshop during this period. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and industrial progress that characterized Swindon Works during its heyday. This historic site played an instrumental role in shaping not only local history but also contributing significantly to Britain's railway industry. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time, it reminds us of how much has changed since then while appreciating those who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes to build our modern world.
