The station opened with the name Newton in December 1846 by the South Devon Railway Company. By the time the name was changed to Newton Abbot in 1877 the station had a large goods shed, train sheds and busy workshops which helped with converting the stock and line to standard gauge.
Newton Abbot station underwent an extension and rebuild between the wars, opening in April 1927 with a Culverhouse designed station building

The station, which opened in December 1846 as Newton by the South Devon Railway Company, had undergone significant expansion and rebuilding between the wars. By the time the name was changed to Newton Abbot in 1877, the station boasted a large goods shed, train sheds, and bustling workshops, which were essential for converting stock and lines to standard gauge. The station underwent another extension and rebuild in April 1927, with the new station building designed by the renowned architect Culverhouse. This elegant structure, which can be glimpsed in the background of the photograph, adds to the picturesque scene. The Castle Class locomotive, No. 7029, Clun Castle, was one of the most powerful and popular locomotives in the Great Western Railway's (GWR) fleet. Its distinctive casing and elegant lines made it a favourite among railway enthusiasts. The Castle Class locomotives were designed by Charles Collett, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR, between 1923 and 1927. They were built to replace the older 4-6-0 locomotives and were designed for express passenger and mixed traffic services.
