Policemen struggle to hold back the surging tide of demonstrators pressing on the approach to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London. Despite heroic efforts, the line gave and the mob broke through into the Square but were turned back from the Embassy. The crowd had marched on the building after an anti-Vietnam war rally in Trafalgar Square. Some of the demonstrators are wearing white paper headbands - the traditional Vietnamese sign of mourning.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a pivotal moment in history as policemen valiantly struggle to hold back the surging tide of demonstrators pressing on the approach to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square, London. The image portrays a scene of intense conflict and tension, symbolizing the deep divisions caused by the Vietnam War. Despite their heroic efforts, the determined line eventually gave way, allowing the impassioned mob to break through into Grosvenor Square. However, their advance was halted at the doors of the Embassy itself. This dramatic clash occurred following an anti-Vietnam war rally held in Trafalgar Square earlier that day. Notably, amidst this sea of protesters can be seen individuals wearing white paper headbands – a poignant display of solidarity with Vietnamese mourning traditions. These symbolic gestures highlight not only opposition to America's involvement in Vietnam but also empathy for those affected by this devastating conflict. The photograph serves as a reminder of how public sentiment regarding war can ignite passionate demonstrations and spark significant social change. It encapsulates both sides' determination and showcases how peaceful protests can challenge established power structures. Taken on March 17th, 1968, this historic image continues to resonate today as a testament to people's unwavering commitment towards justice and peace during times of great turmoil.
