This print showcases Thomas Troubridge, an esteemed English naval officer who achieved the rank of Rear-Admiral. Born around 1758, Troubridge embarked on his illustrious career by joining the Royal Navy in 1773. Throughout his service, he displayed remarkable bravery and skill in various significant battles and expeditions. Notably, Troubridge served in the East Indies as well as distinguished himself at both the Battle of Cape St Vincent and Aboukir Bay. His unwavering commitment to duty earned him respect among his peers and superiors alike. Tragically, fate dealt a cruel blow to this valiant sailor. In 1807, while commanding his ship off the coast of Madagascar, disaster struck as it foundered amidst treacherous waters. The entire crew was lost at sea alongside their courageous leader. Captured with meticulous detail by James Jerdan for London's National Portrait Gallery in 1830, this portrait immortalizes Rear-Admiral Thomas Troubridge's legacy within British naval history.
