The bridge is a famous tourist destination and was destroyed in the Bosnian War in 1993 but rebuilt ten years later. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovinas most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
