France-Ship-Launching
The ocean liner " France" is launched on May 11, 1960 at the Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard, in the port of Saint-Nazaire (France), in front of thousands of spectators.
The France was a Compagnie Gnrale Transatlantique ocean liner, constructed by the Chantiers de l Atlantique shipyard at Saint-Nazaire. Launched 11 May 1960, she was put into service in February 1962, combining regular transatlantic crossings - six days and nights - with winter cruises, as well as two world circumnavigations. The France was later renamed SS Norway and undertook mostly cruises for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). / AFP PHOTO / -

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo, taken on May 11,1960, the grand ocean liner "France" is being launched at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The momentous occasion attracted thousands of enthusiastic spectators who gathered to witness this remarkable feat. The France was an extraordinary creation by the renowned Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. After her launch, she embarked on her maiden voyage in February 1962, offering regular transatlantic crossings that lasted six days and nights. Additionally, she delighted passengers with winter cruises and even completed two world circumnavigations during her illustrious career. As time went on, the France underwent a transformation and was later renamed SS Norway when it joined Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). Under NCL's ownership, she primarily operated as a luxurious cruise ship rather than a transatlantic liner. This stunning photograph captures not only the majestic vessel but also showcases the bustling atmosphere of the shipyard inauguration. The general view reveals an immense crowd eagerly awaiting this historic moment in maritime history. Preserved for posterity by Agence France-Presse (AFP), this square-shaped print serves as a timeless reminder of both technological achievement and human fascination with these magnificent floating palaces.
