Jazz Trumpeter, American Louis Armstrong

Undated and unlocated picture of American Louis Armstrong, the jazz trumpeter whose melodic inventiveness established the central role of the improvising soloist in jazz. Armstrong always said he was born 04 July 1900 in New Orleans although nobody knows the exact date. He was also a popular singer (hit recording include " Mack the Knife", " Hello Dolly!" ) and entertainer in such films as " Pennies from Heaven" (1936), " Cabin in the Sky" (1943), and " High Society" (1956), but he remained primarily a jazz musician, touring the world with his New Orleans-style sextet. Armstrong died 06 July 1971. / AFP PHOTO / STF

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary jazz trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. The undated and unlocated picture captures the essence of this American musical icon whose melodic inventiveness revolutionized the role of improvisation in jazz. While his birthdate remains a mystery, Armstrong always claimed to have been born on July 4th, 1900 in New Orleans. Beyond his exceptional trumpet skills, Armstrong was also a renowned singer with hit recordings like "Mack the Knife" and "Hello Dolly!". His charismatic presence extended beyond music as he entertained audiences through film appearances in classics such as "Pennies from Heaven" "Cabin in the Sky" and "High Society". However, it is important to note that despite his success outside of jazz, Louis Armstrong remained true to his roots as a musician. He dedicated himself primarily to touring worldwide with his New Orleans-style sextet, spreading the infectious joy of jazz across continents. Sadly, this influential figure bid farewell to the world on July 6th, 1971. This AFP photo perfectly encapsulates Armstrong's spirit - square-framed and vertical - capturing him mid-performance with a cigar clenched between his teeth. It serves as an enduring tribute to one of history's greatest musicians who forever shaped the landscape of jazz.
