EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the exquisite Funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto, a masterpiece in marble created by the renowned Italian sculptor Jacopo della Quercia. The monument can be found within the grand Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca, Italy. Dating back to 1408 during the Early Renaissance period, this artwork showcases the seamless blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles that were prevalent during that time. It stands as a testament to Europe's rich artistic heritage from both the first and second millenniums A. D. The photograph itself was taken around 1890, providing us with a glimpse into history and allowing us to appreciate this remarkable piece through time. The attention to detail is striking; every intricate carving on the monument is beautifully captured. In addition to showcasing this magnificent sculpture, there are other elements present in the photo that add depth and interest. A dog rests at Ilaria del Carretto's feet, symbolizing loyalty and fidelity. A putto figure hovers above her head, representing innocence or perhaps an angelic presence. Ilaria herself is depicted in historical costume with an elaborate hairstyle typical of her era. Despite being posthumous, her portrait exudes grace and serenity. A festoon of vegetal elements adorns the composition surrounding Ilaria's resting place – a reminder of life's cyclical nature amidst death. Alinari Fratelli has expertly captured all these details in their photography print – preserving not just an image but also a moment frozen in time for future generations to admire and reflect upon.
