EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the talented photographer Quilici Folco in 1972, transports us to Lower Juba, Somalia. The image captures a moment of intense concentration as two individuals engage in a traditional Somali game reminiscent of checkers. In this ancient game, players create holes in the ground and strategically move stones to prevent their adversary from advancing. The simplicity of the setup belies the complexity and depth of strategy required to outmaneuver one's opponent. As we gaze at this scene frozen in time, we can almost feel the tension that hangs in the air. The composition is strikingly beautiful; it showcases not only the intensity on both players' faces but also provides a glimpse into their surroundings. The barren landscape stretches endlessly behind them, its vastness contrasting with their focused energy. Quilici Folco's skillful use of light and shadow adds an element of drama to this already captivating image. Shadows cast by both men accentuate their determination while highlighting every crease on their weathered faces. Beyond being just a snapshot capturing a momentary diversion, this photograph offers us insight into Somali culture and traditions that have been passed down through generations. It reminds us that even amidst challenging circumstances or limited resources, human ingenuity finds ways to entertain and connect with one another. As we contemplate "Lower Juba" our minds wander back to simpler times when games were played not on screens but within nature itself - where imagination thrived alongside strategic thinking. This powerful visual testament serves as a reminder that joy can be found even in seemingly ordinary moments if we take the time to appreciate them fully.
