Mt Barker, Western Australia. Spring 1957.
Podargus strigoides
This pair nested on exactly the same site in successive years, 1957 and 1958. The nest was about 10m above ground level. Frogmouths are nocturnal and feed mainly on the ground, scooping up invertebrates, or the occcasional mouse or lizard, with their wide, shallow beak. They appear to be mated for life, and are very habitual, often roosting in the same spot for many years. The standing bird has a band on its left leg. Also known as Tawny-shouldered Frogmouth.

Meet our protagonists, a pair of Tawny Frogmouths nestled snugly in their cozy abode within a majestic Jarrah Tree in south-western Australia. These nocturnal lovebirds have chosen this very spot for their nest not once, but twice! In 1957 and 1958, they returned to this leafy haven to raise their feathery family. Perched approximately 10 meters above the ground, these wise creatures enjoy an elevated view fit for royalty. With wide beaks designed for scooping up delectable invertebrates or even the occasional mouse or lizard, these feathered friends are true connoisseurs of fine dining. Their bond is unbreakable; they appear to be mated for life and exhibit habitual tendencies that would make any creature envious. One can't help but notice the band adorning the left leg of our standing protagonist—a unique identifier that sets them apart from other members of their species. Also known as Tawny-shouldered Frogmouths, these captivating birds bring joy with every hoot and flutter. So let us celebrate this timeless romance between two remarkable beings who remind us that love knows no bounds—whether it's perching on branches or sharing meals under moonlit skies.
