EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in medieval history. Depicted is "The Bishop of Tournai Receiving the Tithe of Beer Granted by King Chilperic" as portrayed in a 15th-century window within the Cathedral of Tournai, Belgium. In this scene, we witness the intersection of power, religion, and trade during the Middle Ages. The bishop stands tall and regal, adorned in his ecclesiastical robes, symbolizing his authority over both church and state. He receives with grace and gratitude the tithe of beer granted to him by King Chilperic - an offering that highlights not only their mutual respect but also underscores the importance of brewing as a vital occupation during those times. This image transports us back to an era where craftsmanship was highly esteemed. It reminds us that brewing was not merely a skill or vocation but rather a calling - one that played an integral role in society's commerce and cultural fabric. The intricate details captured through engravings showcase the meticulousness with which this craft was carried out. As we contemplate this historical snapshot, it serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, taxation existed across various industries. In this case, beer served as both sustenance for many and revenue for others. Ken Welsh's expertly crafted print brings to life these illustrations from yesteryears while paying homage to Belgian heritage and Frankish traditions.
