EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the medieval era, where a Pontifical Galley with sails, oars, and heavy artillery dominates the scene. The grandeur of this naval vessel is enhanced by its prominent display of the Papal flag, symbolizing its affiliation with the Pope. Inspired by a drawing from Breugal the Elder and featured in Paul Lacroix's book "Military and Religious Life in the Middle Ages" this illustration offers a glimpse into an important aspect of transportation during that time. The galley's impressive size is evident as it gracefully glides through calm waters. Its massive sails catch every gust of wind, propelling it forward alongside sturdy oars operated by skilled rowers. Towering masts rise above deck, supporting these billowing sails while also serving as strategic vantage points for lookout purposes. What truly sets this pontifical galley apart are its formidable armaments – heavy cannons strategically positioned along its sides. These powerful weapons represent both military might and religious authority, showcasing the influence wielded by the papacy during medieval times. Ken Welsh's expertly captured image allows us to appreciate not only the intricate details of this historical vessel but also provides insight into how transportation played a vital role in shaping society during that period. It serves as a reminder of our rich past and invites us to explore further into our fascinating history.
