EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, titled "View of Mombaza" is a detail from Georg Brauns Civitates orbis terrarum, published in 1572. The print showcases the bustling port city of Mombasa, located in present-day Kenya. The intricate details captured by Braun and Hogenberg transport us back to the vibrant African coast during the 16th century. Ships of various sizes dot the harbor, their sails billowing in the wind as they navigate through calm waters. The scene exudes a sense of maritime activity and trade that was characteristic of this thriving port. Mombasa's strategic location made it an important hub for commerce between Africa, Europe, and Asia during this period. This image offers a glimpse into its cosmopolitan atmosphere with diverse cultures intermingling along its shores. As we explore this historical artwork further, we are reminded that Braun's Civitates orbis terrarum series also included depictions of other significant port cities such as Aden in Yemen, Kilwa in Tanzania, and Sofala in Mozambique. These prints provide valuable insights into global trade networks at a time when European powers were expanding their influence across continents. This particular print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a window into our shared history—a reminder of how interconnected our world has always been.
