EDITORS COMMENTS
Newly arrived baby pygmy forest elephant Tiny, with her keepers Robertson, Stimpson, and Milbourn at London Zoo in 1922. This photograph by Frederick William Bond captures a heartwarming moment between the adorable Tiny and her dedicated caretakers. Tiny was brought to the zoo on October 16th, 1922, by Captain E. A. Cunningham. She quickly became a beloved resident of the London Zoo until November 24th of that year when she was sold to the New York Zoo under Captain Cunningham's ownership. Sadly, Tiny passed away on March 2nd, 1933. In this image, we see Tiny playfully interacting with her keepers as they stand beside her full-length figure. The small size of this pygmy forest elephant is evident compared to its human companions. With its trunk raised high in curiosity or perhaps seeking affectionate touch from one of the keepers, it showcases the gentle nature of these magnificent creatures. The historical significance of this photograph lies not only in capturing an intimate bond between humans and animals but also in documenting a rare species - Loxodonta cyclotis - known as African pygmy forest elephants. These majestic mammals have long fascinated researchers due to their unique characteristics and habitat preferences. This extraordinary snapshot serves as a testament to our ongoing fascination with wildlife conservation efforts and reminds us of our responsibility towards protecting endangered species like Tiny for future generations.
