EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Pugri badge of the United Provinces Horse, dating back to 1904-1947. Crafted in silver, this intricately designed badge features a horseman on a tablet with the battle honor "A Relief of Lucknow" above it. The scroll beneath bears the name of the auxiliary unit, "United Provinces Horse". The pugri or pagri, depicted in this badge, is a traditional headdress worn by soldiers during that era. The United Provinces Light Horse was formed by merging several light horse units from different regions in India. What makes this badge even more fascinating is its resemblance to an equestrian statue sculpted by John Henry Foley - Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram. Outram played a significant role in relieving the besieged city of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). This connection adds historical depth and significance to this exquisite piece. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London as part of Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's Indian Army Collection, this photograph captures not only an artifact but also tells tales of bravery and unity from an important period in India's history.
