The captivating print captures a historic moment of defiance and resilience as Philippe Villiers de L Isle-Adam, the Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John, firmly rejects the propositions presented by Sulayman I in 1522. Engraved by Jean Baptiste Morret in 1792, this color lithograph showcases Jacques Francois Joseph Swebach's remarkable talent for capturing intricate details. In this scene, set against a backdrop of an army camp, Villiers stands tall and resolute in his armor while facing Sulayman I, also known as Suleiman the Magnificent. The tension between these two powerful figures is palpable as they engage in a battle not only for territory but also for honor and dignity. Villiers' refusal to surrender despite enduring a six-month siege on the island of Rhodes speaks volumes about his unwavering commitment to his cause. This act ultimately led to him being allowed to leave with the surviving knights and find refuge in Malta. The image serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fought under Villiers' command during this tumultuous period.
