EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting fable of "The sick lion and the fox" from Jean de La Fontaine's renowned collection. Created in the 19th century by Grandville, a masterful artist known for his anthropomorphic illustrations, this engraving brings to life the tale with exquisite detail. In this scene, we witness a sickly lion lying on a road while a cunning fox approaches cautiously. The lion's regal presence is juxtaposed against his weakened state, symbolizing vulnerability and mortality. Meanwhile, the sly fox embodies intelligence and survival instincts as it carefully navigates its encounter with the king of beasts. The intricate costumes worn by these animal characters add an element of whimsy to the composition. This artistic choice emphasizes their human-like qualities and invites us to reflect upon our own nature through their interactions. As we delve into La Fontaine's timeless literature, we are reminded of his profound ability to use animals as allegories for human behavior and societal issues. Through this print, we are transported back in time to experience one of his most beloved tales firsthand.
