Queen Marie de Medici Disembarking in Antwerp, 1632

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in history as Queen Marie de Medici steps ashore in the bustling city of Antwerp. Painted by Matheus Vroom, this oil on panel masterpiece showcases the grandeur and elegance of the Italian queen. After her husband's tragic assassination, Marie de Medici assumed the role of regent for her young son, King Louis XIII. Fleeing to Brussels in 1630, she embarked on a journey that brought her to Antwerp the following year. Accompanied by archduchess Isabella and esteemed dignitaries such as Marquis de Santa Crux and d'Ayonta, Queen Marie was greeted with great pomp and splendor by the six guilds of the city. The painting depicts a scene filled with vibrant colors and intricate details. Ships adorned with fluttering flags line up along the harbor while plumed horses pull carriages carrying members of royalty through cheering crowds. The towering presence of guild banners adds an air of civic pride to this historic event. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are transported back in time to witness Queen Marie's exile from France and her arrival into Flanders' warm embrace. This image serves as a testament to both her strength as a widow navigating treacherous political waters and her enduring legacy as one of Europe's most influential queens.
