EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating poster takes us back to the enchanting world of early 20th-century opera. Created by the talented artist Georges Marie Rochegrosse, it advertises the first production of the beloved opera "Don Quichotte" at the prestigious yaite-Lyrique Theatre in Monte Carlo on February 19,1910. The poster's colorful lithograph draws our attention with its intricate details and lively composition. It features a scene from Miguel de Cervantes' timeless tale, showcasing Don Quixote and his loyal companion Sancho Panza against a backdrop of Spanish landscapes. The libretto for this comedic-heroic masterpiece was penned by Henri Cain, while Jules Massenet composed its magnificent music. What makes this particular production even more special is that it was tailored specifically for Feodor Chaliapin, an acclaimed Russian bass singer who brought unparalleled depth and emotion to his portrayal of Don Quixote. This role became one of Chaliapin's most celebrated performances throughout his illustrious career. As we admire this vintage poster today, we are transported to a time when literature merged seamlessly with music and art. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Cervantes' iconic characters and their ability to captivate audiences across different mediums. This remarkable piece from Bridgeman Images not only captures the essence of "Don Quichotte" but also pays homage to the power of storytelling through visual arts – reminding us that great works can transcend time and continue
