EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a folio from a Khamsa (Quintet), dating back to the 15th century. Created by an Indian School artist, this masterpiece measures 32.4 x 23.3 cm and is housed in the prestigious Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution in the USA. The folio, detached from a dispersed copy of Amir Khusraw Dihlavi's Khamsa (Quintet), offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of India during the Delhi Sultanate period (1206-1526). The use of opaque watercolor and ink on paper brings life to intricate details and vibrant colors that adorn this artwork. Featuring exquisite calligraphy, delicate illuminations, and mesmerizing drawings, this folio exemplifies Islamic art at its finest. The Persian poems written within reflect both religious and secular themes prevalent in Muslim culture. Its connection to Iran further highlights the influence of Persian aesthetics on Indian manuscript production during this era. Acquired through various sources including Dr. Arthur M. Sackler and Smithsonian Collections Acquisition Program, this piece represents an invaluable addition to the Freer Gallery's collection. As we admire this remarkable work, let us appreciate its historical significance as well as its artistic beauty—a testament to human creativity transcending time and borders.
