EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "Strange climbing birds" takes us on a journey through the diverse avian world of the 19th century. The print showcases an array of peculiar and enchanting species, each with its own unique features and charm. From left to right, we encounter the Paradies-Kuckuck or Flaggendrongo, adorned with vibrant plumage that rivals the colors of paradise itself. Next is the gehaubte Kuckuck or Spitzschopf-Seidenkuckuck, sporting an impressive crest atop its head. The African Kuckuck follows suit, exuding elegance in its simplicity. As our eyes wander further across this ornithological masterpiece, we are greeted by the glanzende Kuckuck or Bronzekuckook – a true embodiment of brilliance and grace. Alongside it stands the Honig-Kukcuk or Schwarzkehl-Honiganzeiger; its black throat serves as a striking contrast against its golden feathers. Moving on to smaller wonders, we discover the Wendehals and his miniature counterpart - der kleinste Wendehals - both known for their ability to twist their necks in astonishing ways. Our attention then shifts towards the Fratzenvogel or Windfacherschwanz – a bird whose comical appearance brings smiles to all who behold it. Finally, we come face-to-face with two remarkable creatures: der grose Madenfresser and VAogel – symbols of nature's relentless pursuit for sustenance and survival. Through this exquisite engraving from Friedrich Justin Bertuch's Picture Book for Children (1790-1830), we are reminded of nature's boundless beauty and diversity. These strange climbing birds serve as ambassadors from another era, inviting us to marvel at their extraordinary existence within our vast natural world.
