EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black and white lithograph from 1916, titled ""Give her my Love", Tommy's Canine Friend Suggests Postscript to the Letter" we are transported back in time to the trenches of World War I. The image depicts a soldier, his faithful canine companion by his side, writing a heartfelt letter home. The soldier is shown wearing a helmet and holding a rifle, surrounded by sandbags that serve as protection against enemy fire. Despite the harsh conditions of war, there is tenderness in his eyes as he writes words of love and longing for someone dear to him. His loyal terrier stands beside him, looking up with an expression that seems to say: "Don't forget to tell her how much you care". This small but significant detail adds depth and emotion to the scene, reminding us of the power of friendship even in times of turmoil. The artist Stanley L. Wood masterfully captures both the physical realities and emotional complexities faced by soldiers during this tumultuous period in history. Through his skilled use of light and shadow, he brings out every line on their faces and every crease on their uniforms - evidence of their strength and resilience amidst unimaginable circumstances. This lithograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of the sacrifices made by those who fought in World War I but also of the enduring bonds between humans and animals. It invites us to reflect on our own relationships and cherish those who bring us comfort during challenging times.
