EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable statue of a lion, believed to be from the Old Kingdom period in ancient Egypt's 6th Dynasty (c. 2325-2175 BC). Crafted out of clay and currently housed at the Ashmolean Museum in the University of Oxford, UK, this piece is a testament to the exquisite artistry of Egyptian civilization. Standing at an impressive height of 42.4 cm after restoration, this majestic sculpture embodies the power and grace associated with lions. Its tawny-colored coat and intricate details bring it to life, capturing the essence of these magnificent creatures. The statue was discovered during excavations led by James Edward Quibell (1867 - 1935) at Hierakonpolis in Aswan Governorate, Egypt. It offers us a glimpse into ancient African history and serves as a reminder of Egypt's rich cultural heritage. As we marvel at this artifact, we are reminded not only of its aesthetic beauty but also its historical significance. This pottery masterpiece represents the craftsmanship and skill that existed within ancient Egyptian society. It stands as evidence of their advanced artisanal techniques and their appreciation for creating objects that would endure through time. Through this photograph provided by Bridgeman Images on Fine Art Finder, we can appreciate both the artistic mastery behind this sculpture and gain insight into one aspect of ancient Egyptian civilization – their reverence for nature's most awe-inspiring creatures: lions.
