EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating engraving by the renowned artist William Hogarth. This whimsical artwork takes us back to the 18th century, where wigs were all the rage in fashion and society. The print showcases an array of extravagant hairstyles, both for men and women, with a satirical twist. Hogarth's keen sense of humor shines through as he pokes fun at the absurdity of these elaborate hairpieces. Each wig represents a different "order" ranging from the towering and flamboyant to more subtle styles adorned with feathers and ribbons. It is evident that this piece serves as both an advertisement for these fashionable accessories and a social commentary on vanity. The attention to detail in Hogarth's engravings is remarkable; every strand of hair seems meticulously crafted. Through his skillful artistry, he invites us into a world where wigs are not just mere accessories but symbols of status and identity. This print transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the eccentricities of 18th-century fashion. It reminds us that trends may come and go, but satire remains timeless. "The Five Orders of Perriwigs" captures our imagination with its wit and charm while shedding light on societal norms during this era.
