It is a melanistic color variant of the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), native to deciduous forests of eastern North America. This rodent, labeled "Écureuil noir" in the original work, primarily feeds on nuts, seeds and fruits, storing food supplies for winter. By Jacques Christophe Werner (1798-1856).
