PRX11961435 The Olm (hand-coloured litho) by Gabler, Ambrosius (1762-1834); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Olm (Proteus anguinus) is a pale pink, eel-shaped tailed amphibian with tiny front and hind legs. Above in the image its skeleton is depicted, while below its external anatomy with characteristic external gill tufts is visible. This blind cave dweller lives exclusively in underground waters of the Dinaric Karst in Southeast Europe. As an adapted cave organism, it has regressed eyes, translucent skin without pigments, and can survive up to 10 years without food due to its conservative metabolism.
