(19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) displays its striking black and yellow warning coloration, indicating its toxicity. Below are the smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris, historically labeled as Triton taeniatus) with its slender, brownish body and the crested newt (Triturus cristatus, now belonging to genus Triturus) with characteristic dark spots on an orange belly. At the bottom is the flesh-colored olm (Proteus anguinus), a blind cave dweller with external gills that lives in underground waters of the Dinaric Alps.
