EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Anne of Austria, the illustrious Queen of France and Navarre, alongside her two sons, Dauphin Louis of France (the future Louis XIV) and Philippe I, Duke of Orleans. The engraving was created by an anonymous French artist in the 17th century and is currently housed in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France. Anne d'Autriche, born in 1601 as an Infanta of Spain, became the wife of King Louis XIII. In this image, she appears regal and dignified despite wearing mourning attire following her husband's passing. Seated gracefully with her young sons by her side, Anne exudes both strength and maternal tenderness. The composition is rich with symbolism: ermine fur symbolizes royalty; fleur de lys represents French monarchy; a crown signifies power; a scepter denotes authority; while a laurel wreath symbolizes victory. A delicate curtain adorned with lace frames the scene beautifully. Notably present is a loyal dog at their feet—a faithful companion that mirrors their unity as a family. Their hands are intertwined affectionately—an intimate gesture that speaks volumes about their bond. This enchanting portrayal captures not only the elegance and grace of Anne but also hints at the promising futures awaiting her sons. It serves as a poignant reminder of a significant era marked by political turmoil—the Battle of Rocroy during the Thirty Years War—where bravery prevailed.
