18th century frescoes and statues of Buddhism shrine at Dambadeniya Temple (Vijayasundararama temple at Dambadeniya)

King Vijayabahu III (1232 AD - 1236 AD) is the first king of Dambadeniya kingdom. Native Sinhalese began to move to the south or Maya rata because of the hard Tamil ruler Kalinga Magha as mentioned in Polonnaruwa kingdom. While he was the king of Polonnaruwa, king Vijayabahu III (a descendant of king Sirisangabo) became the king of Dambadeniya.
He conveyed tooth relic and Lord Buddhas alms bowl to Dambadeniya from its hiding place Kotmale. His reign was largely spent reconstructing the shattered Buddhist infrastructure of the Sinhalese

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent 18th century frescoes and statues of the Buddhism shrine at Dambadeniya Temple, also known as Vijayasundararama temple. Located in Dambadeniya, this sacred site holds great historical significance in Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage. During the reign of King Vijayabahu III (1232 AD - 1236 AD), who was the first king of the Dambadeniya kingdom, a significant migration occurred among native Sinhalese people. They moved to the southern region, known as Maya rata, due to the oppressive rule of Kalinga Magha, a Tamil ruler during that time in Polonnaruwa kingdom. King Vijayabahu III played a crucial role in preserving Buddhist relics and artifacts. He brought forth the revered tooth relic and Lord Buddha's alms bowl from their hiding place in Kotmale to Dambadeniya. His reign was dedicated to reconstructing and restoring the shattered Buddhist infrastructure that had been ravaged by previous events. The intricate details depicted on these frescoes and statues are a testament to both artistic excellence and religious devotion. This photograph captures not only their beauty but also serves as a reminder of Sri Lanka's enduring spiritual legacy. Imagebook/Theekshana Kumara has skillfully captured this remarkable piece of history through their lens, allowing us to appreciate its grandeur for generations to come.
