Japanese Woodblock of a Kabuki actor

" Kunisada (1786-1865), was in his own time was the most popular and successful print designer in Japan. This print shows a Kabuki actor Ichikawa Kyuzo and was published in 1839 and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints. Kunisada was born in Edo and started out creating actor prints, the initial specialty of the Utagawa school, but eventually branched out into bijin-ga (beautiful women), and even also landscapes. During his lifetime, he produced a vast number of prints. He died in Edo, having made only one documented trip out of it in his whole life!"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Japanese woodblock by Kunisada, the most celebrated print designer of his time in Japan. The artwork portrays Ichikawa Kyuzo, a renowned Kabuki actor, and dates back to 1839. As an avid collector of original woodblock prints, this exquisite piece holds a special place in my private collection. Kunisada's artistic journey began with creating prints featuring actors, which was the Utagawa school's initial specialty. However, he soon expanded his repertoire to include bijin-ga (beautiful women) and even landscapes. Throughout his lifetime, Kunisada produced an astonishing number of prints that captivated audiences across Japan. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Kunisada rarely ventured beyond the city limits throughout his life; making only one documented trip away from it. This fact adds an air of mystique to his work and deepens our appreciation for the profound influence he had on Japanese art during this period. In this particular woodblock print, we see Ichikawa Kyuzo portrayed with great skill and attention to detail. His expression exudes both strength and vulnerability while capturing the essence of Kabuki theater's storytelling tradition. The composition evokes a sense of tranquility reminiscent of Zen philosophy. As I gaze upon this stunning image, I am transported into a world where warriors and samurais come alive through vivid colors and intricate lines. It serves as a testament to Kunisada's unparalleled talent as well as my
