Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui) of Dujiangyan irrigation system, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China
Dujiangyan is an irrigation infrastructure built in 256 BC. It is located in the Min River in Sichuan, China. The Fish Mouth Levee, named for its conical head that is said to resemble the mouth of a fish, is the key part of Li Bingas construction. It is an artificial levee that divides the water into inner and outer streams. The inner stream is deep and narrow, while the outer stream is relatively shallow but wide. This special structure ensures that the inner stream carries approximately 60% of the riveras flow into the irrigation system during dry season. While during flood, this amount decreases to 40% to protect the people from flooding. The outer stream drains away the rest, flushing out much of the silt and sediment.Dujiangyan is still in use today to irrigate over 5, 300 square kilometers of land in the region

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Fish Mouth Levee (Yuzui) of the Dujiangyan irrigation system in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. The ancient Dujiangyan irrigation infrastructure was ingeniously built in 256 BC and is still functional today, irrigating over 5,300 square kilometers of land in the region. The Fish Mouth Levee gets its name from its distinctive conical head that resembles a fish's mouth. This artificial levee plays a crucial role in dividing the water into inner and outer streams. During dry seasons, approximately 60% of the river's flow is directed into the irrigation system through the deep and narrow inner stream. However, during floods, this amount decreases to 40% to protect local communities from flooding. The outer stream effectively drains away excess water while flushing out silt and sediment. This stunning image captures not only the historical significance but also highlights the majestic beauty and tranquility of this architectural marvel set against a picturesque backdrop. With selective focus enhancing its simplicity and purity, it evokes a sense of fantasy as one imagines how this engineering feat has stood strong for centuries. As an international landmark recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, this photograph encapsulates both ancient history and modern-day relevance. It invites viewers to appreciate Chinese culture's rich heritage while showcasing nature's breathtaking beauty intertwined with human ingenuity.
