In this illustration from Handley Cross; or, Mr. Jorrocksas Hunt by Rs Surtees and illustrated by John Leech, a Victorian woman sits with great concentration at an embroidery frame. The vertical composition of the image emphasizes her focus as she delicately sews intricate patterns. The scene exudes a sense of skill and relaxation, showcasing the artistry and dedication involved in embroidery during that era. As one of only women engaged in this activity, it offers a glimpse into the past when such pursuits were considered appropriate for ladies of leisure. The monochrome palette adds to its timeless appeal while capturing the essence of British culture prevalent during that period.
