Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) against snowy forest, Bear River Range, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Utah, USA
Douglas fir, with the scientific name Pseudotsuga menziesii, is an evergreen conifer species native to western North America. The common name honors David Douglas, a Scottish botanist and collector who first reported the extraordinary nature and potential of the species. Extant coast Douglas fir trees 60-75 m (197-246 ft) or more in height and 1.5-2 m (4.9-6.6 ft) in diameter are common in old growth stands, and maximum heights of 100-120 m (330-390 ft) and diameters up to 4.5-6 m (15-20 ft) have been documented. The rooting habit of coast Douglas fir is not particularly deep, with the roots tending to be shallower than those of same-aged ponderosa pine, sugar pine, or California incense-cedar, though deeper than Sitka spruce

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic beauty of a Douglas fir tree standing tall amidst a snowy forest in the Bear River Range, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Utah, USA. The Douglas fir, scientifically known as Pseudotsuga menziesii, is an evergreen conifer native to western North America. Its common name pays tribute to David Douglas, a Scottish botanist who first recognized its extraordinary qualities and potential. In this image, we witness the grandeur of mature coast Douglas firs that can reach staggering heights of 60-75 meters (197-246 feet) or more and diameters ranging from 1.5-2 meters (4.9-6.6 feet). Some exceptional specimens have even been documented towering up to 100-120 meters (330-390 feet) with diameters reaching 4.5-6 meters (15-20 feet). Despite their immense size, these trees possess relatively shallow roots compared to other species like ponderosa pine or Sitka spruce but deeper than sugar pine or California incense-cedar. This particular photograph captures the essence of winter's embrace as snow blankets the landscape surrounding this resilient evergreen. Danita Delimont skillfully captures nature's serene allure in this horizontal composition devoid of human presence. It serves as a reminder of the awe-inspiring wonders found within our national forests and highlights the enduring strength and adaptability of these remarkable trees against cold temperatures.
