Magaliesberg Mountain Rock Formations at Sunset with a View over the Mountain Range, Magaliesberg Mountains, North West Province, South Africa
The Magaliesberg is a mountain range extending west and north from Pretoria to just south of the Pilanesberg and extending for some 50 km east of Pretoria where it peters out just south of Bronkhorstspruit. The highest point of the Magaliesberg is reached at Nooitgedacht from where this photo was taken. The Magaliesberg are also historically known as Macalisberg or as the Cashan Mountains. The Magaliesberg is said to have formed some 2 billion years ago after a massive upwelling of molten magma resulted in what is now known as the Bushveld Igneous Complex. The Magaliesberg is a protected area and also an area very diverse in indigenous flora endemic to the area. From this elevation one can see all the way into the North West Province towards Rustenburg. This photograph shows the natural rock formations up close at sunset
