This woodcut print from 1494 transports us back to ancient Rome, depicting the timeless tale of Pyramus and Thisbe. The intricate details and delicate lines of the woodcut technique bring this romantic myth to life, capturing the essence of love, tragedy, and longing. In this scene, we see two lovers separated by a stone fountain adorned with Hellenic motifs. Pyramus stands on one side, his lion-like strength evident in his posture as he gazes longingly towards Thisbe on the other side. Thisbe's beauty is accentuated by her flowing robes and graceful stance as she reaches out towards her beloved. The story behind this woodcut dates back centuries: Pyramus and Thisbe were young neighbors who fell deeply in love but were forbidden to marry due to their families' rivalry. Undeterred by societal constraints, they devised a secret plan to meet under cover of darkness near a mulberry tree outside the city walls. However, fate had different plans for them that night. As Thisbe arrived first at their meeting place, she was startled by a roaring lioness with bloodstained jaws. Fleeing in fear, she dropped her veil which became stained with blood when the lioness tore it apart. When Pyramus arrived shortly after and discovered his lover's torn veil soaked in blood, he believed that she had been killed by the beast.
