EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print showcases the remarkable Townsend's mole, a fascinating creature native to the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Created in 1854 by John Woodhouse Audubon for his father John James Audubon's renowned publication "Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America" this artwork beautifully captures the essence of this elusive insectivore. In the image, we see the Townsend's mole reclining on its burrow entrance amidst lush grass and twigs. Its velvety fur blends seamlessly with its surroundings, allowing it to remain hidden from predators while hunting for its favorite prey below ground. The intricate details captured by Audubon highlight not only the physical characteristics but also the behavior and habitat preferences of this unique species. The mid-19th-century lithograph transports us back in time, providing a glimpse into an era when zoology was still being explored and documented. It serves as a testament to both Audubons' dedication to scientific illustration and their passion for preserving nature through art. As we admire this print, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also recognize how it contributes to our understanding of wildlife diversity in America. This piece invites us into a world where wild creatures like Townsend's mole roam freely beneath our feet, reminding us that even within seemingly ordinary landscapes lies extraordinary beauty waiting to be discovered.
