Captain L. E. G. Oates by the Stable Door, 30 August 1911, (1913). Lawrence Titus Oates (1880-1912) suffering from gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of heroic self-sacrifice - aware that his ill health was compromising his three companions chances of survival, he chose certain death. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This poignant print captures Captain L. E. G. Oates by the Stable Door on 30 August 1911, taken by artist Herbert Ponting as part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). The image portrays Lawrence Titus Oates, a brave British Antarctic explorer who tragically lost his life during this fateful journey. Suffering from gangrene and frostbite, Oates made an incredible sacrifice for his companions' survival. Aware that his deteriorating health was compromising their chances of making it back alive, he chose to walk into a blizzard, accepting certain death. His act of heroic self-sacrifice has since been revered. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the expedition aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also striving to become the first team to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on 17 January 1912, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies on their return journey, Scott and the remaining members of his team perished at the end of March. It took eight months before their bodies and diaries were found. The photograph is featured in "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , documenting this historic and ill-fated mission that forever etched these explorers' names into history books worldwide.
