EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Craftsmen, Cairo, Egypt, Africa, 1936" transports us back in time to witness the age-old artistry of Egyptian craftsmen. The image showcases a skilled craftsman diligently working on his craft with a direct gaze that exudes focus and determination. The artist behind this remarkable piece is Donald McLeish, whose lens beautifully captures the juxtaposition of ancient designs being woven onto modern cloth. This photograph was featured in the book "Peoples of the World in Pictures" edited by Harold Wheeler and published by Odhams Press Ltd in London during 1936. Intriguingly set against a backdrop adorned with hieroglyphics - symbols that hold centuries of history and culture - this image symbolizes the deep connection between past traditions and contemporary craftsmanship. The craftsman's headdress or turban adds an element of authenticity to his occupation as he skillfully sews and darns intricate patterns onto fabric. Through this photograph, McLeish not only documents a moment frozen in time but also highlights the importance of preserving indigenous arts within their respective countries. It serves as a reminder that craftsmanship is not just a job but an art form passed down through generations. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured almost nine decades ago, it sparks our curiosity about life in Cairo during the thirties while emphasizing how cultural heritage continues to shape our world today.
