Emblems for Royal Crown Lodge No. 22, 1810 / 15. Creator: Unknown
Emblems for Royal Crown Lodge No. 22, 1810/15. Sign, probably from an English lodge of the Odd Fellows, an international fraternal organisation founded to promote mutual aid, charity, and moral responsibility. The symbols include a heart in hand, denoting openness and sincerity, and an hourglass, suggesting lifes transience. Latin inscription: Amicitia, Amor et Veritas, (Friendship, Love and Truth). Chartered groups developed in the United States beginning in 1819. While the English orders had long admitted black members, several American lodges broke away in 1842 to enforce white-only membership. The English continued issuing charters to African Americans, who built an influential network of inclusive Odd Fellows lodges

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print captures the Emblems for Royal Crown Lodge No. 22, created in 1810/15 by an unknown artist. The emblems are believed to be from an English lodge of the Odd Fellows, a global fraternal organization established to foster mutual aid, charity, and moral responsibility. Among the symbols depicted are a heart in hand, representing openness and sincerity, and an hourglass symbolizing life's transience. The Latin inscription "Amicitia, Amor et Veritas" translates to "Friendship, Love and Truth" encapsulating the values upheld by this ancient order. While African Americans were admitted into English Odd Fellows lodges since early on, some American branches broke away in 1842 to enforce white-only membership policies. However, African Americans continued receiving charters from England and built a significant network of inclusive Odd Fellows lodges. This artwork reflects various themes such as friendship force, mortality represented by skulls and hourglasses, symbolism related to astronomy with references to the moon and solar system elements like suns or stars. It also showcases elements of British heritage art with its intricate design. Displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago's gallery dedicated to arts of the Americas during the 19th century; this oil painting on panel offers a glimpse into historical traditions that shaped fraternal organizations worldwide while shedding light on their complex history regarding racial inclusivity.
