EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a family from Oklahoma in Highway City, near Fresno, California during the year 1939. The creator of this powerful image is none other than Dorothea Lange, an iconic photographer known for her work documenting the struggles faced by Americans during the Great Depression. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see a father standing tall with his children beside him. They are dressed in simple clothing that reflects their humble circumstances as agricultural workers. Behind them stands a modest house, symbolizing both shelter and hope amidst economic hardship. The composition of the photograph draws our attention to the fence separating them from unknown possibilities beyond. It serves as a reminder of their forced displacement and migration due to dire economic conditions. Through Lange's lens, we witness not only their physical journey but also the emotional weight carried by each member of this resilient family. As we gaze upon this image preserved by the Library of Congress' Congressional Library collection, it becomes clear that Dorothea Lange's work goes far beyond mere documentation; it is art that speaks volumes about American history and human resilience. This photograph encapsulates an era defined by struggle and perseverance while honoring those who endured immense hardships during one of America's darkest times - The Great Depression.
