EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: This powerful print captures a significant historical moment, depicting the "Forced Baptism of Arab women" after the taking of Granada. The image showcases an attic adorned with exquisite wooden reliefs within the main altarpiece, created between 1520 and 1522 by Felipe de Borgona (known as Felipe de Bigarny), a renowned sculptor from the 16th century. The scene takes place in Granada Cathedral's Royal Chapel, where this remarkable plateresque artwork is housed. The forced baptism depicted here symbolizes a pivotal event in Spain's history when Muslim rule came to an end in Granada. It serves as a reminder of religious conflicts and cultural transformations that shaped Andalucia during that time. The vertical composition highlights the grandeur and intricate details of these wooden reliefs, showcasing Felipe de Bigarny's exceptional craftsmanship. The vibrant colors add depth to the sculpture, enhancing its visual impact. Santiago Ortega skillfully captured this historic moment through his lens, allowing us to appreciate both the artistic mastery and historical significance behind this piece. This print serves as a testament to Spain's rich heritage while also reminding us of past struggles and their lasting impact on society.
