The General Post-Office; The Inland Letter Office, 1844. Creator: Unknown

The General Post-Office; The Inland Letter Office, 1844. Workers in the main post office at St Martins Le Grand in London. The inland sorters room...is well ventilated...in height it is about seventy-eight feet. In the central portion of the roof is an extensive sky-light, which, with three sash-windows near the top of the walls at each end, are the only places where the light of day is admitted. At the southern end of this spacious room is placed a long table, transversely fixed, upon which the letters are thrown as they are from time to time received from the boxes or brought into the office from the different collecting carts employed for that purpose throughout the metropolis. Ranged in rows, diversely placed, are other tables used for the purposes of the duty - such as stamping, examining, and assorting letters. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
The General Post-Office; The Inland Letter Office, 1844. Step into the bustling world of the 19th-century postal service with this photo print. Taken inside the main post office at St Martins Le Grand in London, it offers a glimpse into the daily operations of mail sorting and delivery during Victorian times. The image showcases the well-ventilated inland sorters room, towering at an impressive height of approximately seventy-eight feet. Natural light streams through an extensive sky-light in the central portion of the roof and three sash-windows near each end, providing much-needed illumination to this vast space. At one end of this spacious room stands a long table where letters are thrown as they arrive from various collection points across the metropolis. Rows of other tables are scattered throughout for stamping, examining, and assorting letters—an organized chaos that keeps communication flowing smoothly. Intriguingly captured by an unknown creator and featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this black-and-white engraving transports us back to a time when newspapers were king and men diligently worked to ensure every letter reached its intended recipient. This historical snapshot not only highlights Britain's efficient postal system but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and dedication. As we admire these workers immersed in their tasks amidst pigeon holes filled with correspondence waiting to be sorted, we gain appreciation for how far our communication methods have evolved over time.
