EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the elegant exterior of Miramar, a neoclassical mansion located in Newport, Rhode Island, between 1917 and 1927. Designed by renowned architect Horace Trumbauer, Miramar was commissioned by Eleanor Elkins Widener and her husband George Widener as their summer residence. Tragically, George perished aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912, and Eleanor later married geographer and explorer Alexander H. Rice Jr. The mansion, a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture, boasts grand columns, intricate detailing, and a symmetrical facade. The gardens surrounding Miramar were designed by Jacques Greber, a renowned landscape architect, who created a picturesque setting with lush greenery, winding paths, and serene water features. Eleanor Elkins Widener Rice and her husband, Alexander, enjoyed many summers at Miramar, entertaining guests and engaging in their various philanthropic pursuits. The mansion and its gardens have since become an iconic part of Newport's rich cultural heritage. This photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, provides a glimpse into the grandeur and beauty of a bygone era. The Miramar estate stands as a testament to the opulence and sophistication of America's Gilded Age, a time when wealth and status were reflected in the grandeur of one's home and gardens.
