Hut Point and Observation Hill, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Hut Point and Observation Hill, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the breathtaking landscape of Hut Point and Observation Hill during the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, this image is a testament to the bravery and determination of the British Antarctic Expedition. Led by Scott, this historic journey aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also being the first to reach the South Pole. The diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and facing numerous challenges along their path, Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - finally reached their long-awaited destination. However, the joy was short-lived as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, the entire team perished at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle against nature's forces. This remarkable photograph from "Scott's Last Expedition" serves as a powerful reminder of both human resilience in extreme environments and the sacrifices made in pursuit of scientific discovery.
