EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern yet commanding presence of Johann Tserclaes Graf Von Tilly, a prominent figure in European history. The portrait, created in 1933 by an unknown artist, depicts Count Tilly as a distinguished aristocrat with a full beard and wearing traditional attire. Count Tilly played a significant role during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), where he commanded the Catholic army at its inception. He was appointed by Maximilian I of Bavaria to reorganize the Bavarian army in 1610 and later succeeded Wallenstein as Commander-in-Chief of Imperial Forces in 1630. Tragically, Count Tilly met his demise on the battlefield against Swedish forces at the crossing of the river Lech in Germany in 1632. His mortal wounds marked an end to his illustrious military career but solidified his place as one of history's notable soldiers. The photograph is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a collection featuring cigarette-card portrait miniatures that depict influential figures from various historical periods. This particular image showcases Count Tilly's strong physique and determined expression, capturing both his physicality and character. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back to the seventeenth century when war raged across Europe. It serves as a reminder of those who shaped our world through their actions on battlefields long ago - individuals like Johann Tserclaes Graf Von Tilly whose legacy lives on through images such as this one.
