This print showcases the renowned 17th-century English poet, John Milton. Created in 1820 by JT Wedgwood, this portrait captures the essence of Milton's intellectual prowess and literary genius. Milton, known for his epic masterpiece Paradise Lost, published in 1667, is depicted here with his long hair cascading over his collar. His intense gaze reflects a depth of knowledge and wisdom acquired through years of dedication to his craft. Despite losing his sight around 1652, Milton continued to write prolifically, defying all odds. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this image, emphasizing the significance of Milton's contributions to British literature during the seventeenth century. The attention to detail in this engraving highlights both Wedgwood's artistic skill and Thurston's expertise as a print collector. As we observe this portrait today, we are reminded not only of Milton's profound impact on poetry but also of the resilience he demonstrated throughout his life.
